Characterizing Non-stationarity in the Presence of Long-range Dependence

چکیده
Based on ours and other studies, it is becoming evident that Internet traffic is often nonstationary. Since such traffic is generally found to be long-range dependent as well, and the two properties can get confused, it is important to have a method for separately characterizing them. This paper proposes such a methodology aimed specifically for traffic scenarios where nonstationarity comes into play at a relatively large time-scale. This methodology allows us to accurately characterize nonstationarity and and longrange dependence and thereby synthetically generate traffic exhibiting it. Such synthetic traffic can be used for performance engineering, dynamic resource allocation and overload control. We illustrate the methodology by applying it to traffic traces from three very different types of commercial web-service environments.

A Practical Method for Weak Stationarity Test of Network Traffic with Long-Range Dependence
Testing the stationarity of real traffic remains a problem worth studying. Due to the importance of traffic theory in the Internet, to find a solution to such a problem brooks no delay. This paper presents a way to do the weak stationarity test of traffic with long-range dependence (LRD) as a single history traffic series of finite length. How to apply this method to real traffic on a packet-by...

The presence of stock market efficiency is a distinctive characteristic of the effectively functioning market economy. Investigation of the market efficiency of seven emerging East-European stock exchanges is carried out as their major stock indices (BELEX15, BET, CROBEX, ISE100, PFTS, RTSI, SOFIX) are studied in respect of long-range dependence (LRD), persistency, and forecasting possibili...
متن کاملSEMIFAR models - a semiparametric framework for modelling trends, long-range dependence and nonstationarity
Time series in many areas of application often display local or global trends. Typical models that provide statistical \explanations" of such trends are, for example, polynomial regression, smooth bounded trends that are estimated nonparametrically, and di erence-stationary processes such as, for instance, integrated ARIMA processes. In addition, there is a fast growing literature on stationary...
متن کاملMeasuring Long - Range Dependence under Changing
Recent measurements of various types of network traac have shown evidence consistent with long-range dependence and self-similarity. However, an alternative explanation for these measurements is non-stationarity in the data. Standard estimators of LRD parameters such as the Hurst parameter H assume stationarity and are susceptible to bias when this assumption does not hold. Hence LRD may be ind...
متن کاملDetecting non-stationarity in extreme rainfall data observed in Northern Italy
Recent analyses have claimed the possible presence of non-stationarity, produced by the presence of either trend or long-term climatic fluctuations, in some historical hydrometeorological records observed in Europe as well as in other countries. Such non-stationarity might exert a remarkable effect on the estimation of the frequency distribution of the extreme events. However, it is well known ...
